Imagine you received $100 and wanted to give God $10. Would it matter if you set that $10 aside for Him first? Technically, $10 is still $10 whether it’s given first or last.
But in terms of your relationship with Him, whether you put God first makes all the difference.
Take, for instance, when cake is shared at a birthday party. Cut evenly, and everyone will get the same piece. Yet in some cultures, the order in which it’s given matters.
The one who gets the first piece can be seen as the most valued or important person to the one celebrating.
It’s the same with God. He owns everything and doesn’t need anything from us. Still, His Word tells us not only to give, but to give our first and best to Him (Proverbs 3:9).
But it doesn’t stop there. The attitude in which you give also matters.
The Bible says, “you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:7 NIV).
At the end of the day, it’s a matter of the heart. Whether it’s your money, time, or energy, when you put God first, it shows you value Him above everything else.
Then, if there is any hesitation in putting Him first, it signals a need for reflection and growth.
So, in which areas of your life can you start giving to God first? The wise believer understands that it’s not just about the gift, but also how it is given that makes a difference.
