Don’t Believe The First Thing You Hear | Proverbs 18:17

Have you ever been completely sure about something… only to find out you were wrong?

Years ago, I worked as a videographer on a mock court case. I was convinced the first side was telling the truth—guilty for sure.

Then the defense spoke… and everything changed.

The more I listened, the less certain I became. What once felt obvious was no longer clear.

That moment stayed with me.

In life, we often hear one side and assume it’s the full story. But it rarely is. People leave out details, speak from their own perspective, or don’t admit their part in the situation.

And if we’re not careful, we end up judging others unfairly—or making decisions based on incomplete truth.

Sometimes, it even affects how we see ourselves—believing one negative voice instead of what God says about us.

Proverbs 18:17 says, “The first to speak seems right, until another comes and examines him.”

The wise believer doesn’t rush to conclusions based on one side.
They pause, they listen, and they seek the full truth.

Because what seems right at first… may not be the whole story.
